Cheryl Cole‘s ’The Promise’ is now the fastest selling single of 2010, shifting over 157,000 units to debut at #1 in the UK this week. The Geordie goddess fended off fierce competition from Rihanna‘s ‘Only Girl (In The World)’ which debuted behind it with 126,000 copies sold. This is Chezza’s second solo chart topper – her last #1 single ‘Fight For This Love’ pulled over 292,000 first-week sales. Can’t top that one, can you?
Joe McElderry‘s Wide Awake album has missed out on the top spot, debuting at #3 in the UK this week. Why must the British public do this to me? Do they enjoy kicking puppies too? Elsewhere, The Wanted‘s self-titled debut enters at #4.
Sia‘s ‘Clap Your Hands’ has belatedly cracked the Aussie Top 40 this week, entering at #33 while her We Are Born album returns at #34. The track has been nominated for the ARIA’s prestigious Single of The Year category and We Are Born is going up for Album of The Year, Best Pop Release and Best Independent Release. The 2010 ARIA Awards go live this Sunday at the Sydney Opera House. Fingers crossed for our girl!
Triple J‘s Like A Version Volume 6 may be the highest selling new album here this week, debuting at #2, but check out the disappointing sales figures. A little over 5500 copies? That’s pretty average. Elsewhere, Kings of Leon‘s reigning #1 album shifted over 12,500 copies last week.
Matt Corby‘s latest EP – Transition To Colour - debuts at #6 on the physical singles chart here this week. Turns out, this is the 2007 Australian Idol runner-up’s third EP just when I thought he had faded into oblivion.
Sarah McLeod‘s dark electro cover of Bruce Springsteen‘s ‘Dancing In The Dark’ debuts at #39 on our Aussie club charts this week. I know it’s a stretch but given Robyn‘s recent ditching of Australia for US domination, I’m inclined to transfer all my love and fixation to Sarah’s projects. Her electro dance releases have been so far so good.
Miami Horror‘s ‘Holidays’ crashes the local club chart at #48 this week. There are several new generation dance masters jumping on the remixes - check for D Cup, Ou Est Le Swimming Pool and even Sam Sparro‘s contributions.
Taio Cruz‘s never ending Rokstarr project has spawned another single and unsurprisingly so, it’s a new recording that isn’t featured on any current incarnations of the album. A new version of ‘Higher’ – featuring our goddess Kylie – was issued to Aussie airwaves last week and is incidentally the most added new track.
James Blunt‘s comeback single Stay The Night enters at #37 in the UK this week. This is Bluntsy on Prozac – what’s not to love about it? The British singer/songwriter has announced a four day promo stopover in Australia on 20 November. Perfect time to soak up the sunshine with his new tune.
Shakespears Sister scores that unexpected chart return thanks to Cher Lloyd‘s tear-jerking rendition of ‘Stay’ on this week’s X Factor. The feisty femmecee turned me into a blubbering mess by the end of that performance. The song – which spent eight weeks at #1 in the UK back 1992 – came back at #64 this week.
Charlotte Church‘s comeback album Back To Scratch debuts at #23 in the UK this week. I can’t imagine her stripped back return to pop being something to scale the Top 20 but it’ll probably bode well with the adult contemporary market. Charlie’s last album Tissues & Issues was a major pop affair in 2005, certifying gold sales and spawning four Top 20 singles.
Taylor Swift‘s Speak Now album debuts at #6 in the UK this week. Keep an eye out for an Aussie and American chart position on next week’s Chart Feed.
It’s been an amazing week for new music in the US with seven chart debuts making the Top 10. The four biggest selling albums in the country are all new releases – Sugaland‘s The Incredible Machine (#1), Kings of Leon‘s Come Around Sundown (#2), Elton John & Leon Russell‘s The Union (#3) and Rod Stewart‘s Fly Me To The Moon: The Great American Songbook (#4). Other impressive new entries include Glee‘s Rocky Horror EP (#6) and Shakira‘s bilingual album Sale El Sol (#7).
Pink‘s ‘Raise Your Glass’ moves up to #10 in the US this week, making this her ninth solo Top 10 hit there. The music video is said to be premiering on MTV Australia today, so expect the clip to go up online any time now.
